Lucy enjoying a coffee in Santorini, Greece

Hello! I'm Lucy, and I've spent the better part of a decade falling in love with European cities, one cobblestone street at a time. What started as weekend escapes from London has evolved into a passion for discovering the stories, flavors, and hidden corners that make each destination unique.

I believe the best travel experiences happen when you venture beyond the guidebook recommendations – when you stumble upon a family-run trattoria in Rome's Trastevere, discover a secret viewpoint in Prague's Malá Strana, or find yourself sharing stories with locals in a cozy Vienna coffee house. These moments of genuine connection and discovery are what travel is really about.

My Travel Philosophy

Travel isn't about ticking boxes or collecting passport stamps. It's about curiosity, openness, and the willingness to let a place surprise you. I've learned that the most authentic experiences often happen away from the main squares and tourist districts – in neighborhood cafés where locals read morning papers, at markets where vendors have been selling the same specialties for generations, and on quiet streets where history whispers rather than shouts.

Through The Discovery Siren, I share the kind of travel insights I wish I'd had during my early adventures. Not just what to see, but how to experience it authentically. Not just where to eat, but how to understand the food culture. Not just where to stay, but which neighborhoods will give you genuine local flavor.

My Story

I started traveling seriously during university breaks, when budget airlines made European city breaks affordable for a student with more curiosity than cash. My first solo trip to Barcelona changed everything – I discovered that traveling alone didn't mean being lonely, and that the best conversations often happened with strangers over coffee or wine.

After university, I worked in London while using every holiday and weekend to explore another European destination. Prague enchanted me with its fairytale spires. Copenhagen taught me about hygge and the art of living well. Porto showed me that the most beautiful cities aren't always the most famous ones. Each journey added another layer to my understanding of European culture, history, and the beautiful diversity that exists within this relatively small continent.

Writing about these experiences started as personal journals, then evolved into sharing recommendations with friends, and eventually became The Discovery Siren. The name reflects my belief that travel should call to you like a siren song – irresistible, transformative, and ultimately leading you toward new discoveries about the world and yourself.

My Travel Timeline

From Student Backpacker to Travel Writer

2016 - The Beginning

First solo trip to Barcelona - stayed in a tiny hostel in El Raval, got lost in the Gothic Quarter, and fell in love with solo travel. This trip taught me that being alone didn't mean being lonely.

Key lesson: The best travel stories happen when you're open to getting lost.

2017 - Eastern European Discovery

Prague, Budapest, Vienna - A 10-day solo journey through Central Europe on a shoestring budget. Stayed in communist-era hostels, ate street food, and discovered my love for underrated destinations.

Key lesson: The most beautiful cities aren't always the most expensive ones.

2018 - Nordic Adventure

Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo - My first experience with Scandinavian culture and design. Learned about hygge, spent a fortune on coffee, and realized that expensive doesn't always mean out of reach if you're smart about it.

Key lesson: Budget travel is possible anywhere with the right mindset and local knowledge.

2019 - Mediterranean Immersion

Greek islands, Italian coast, Southern France - A summer of slow travel, staying weeks rather than days in each place. This is when I started seriously documenting my experiences and sharing tips with friends.

Key lesson: Slow travel reveals the soul of a place that rushing never can.

2020-2021 - The Pivot

UK deep-dive & writing focus - When international travel paused, I explored every corner of Britain and started The Discovery Siren blog. Turned travel dreams into detailed guides for when the world reopened.

Key lesson: Sometimes the best preparation for future adventures is deepening your appreciation for home.

2022 - Renaissance

Portugal, Spain, Netherlands - Return to European travel with a more intentional approach. Started creating content for TikTok and Instagram, focusing on authentic local experiences over tourist attractions.

Key lesson: Social media can enhance travel storytelling without compromising authenticity.

2023-2024 - Hidden Gems Era

Eastern Europe focus: Slovenia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria - Dedicated time to exploring Europe's most underrated destinations. These trips produced some of my most popular guides and reinforced my passion for lesser-known places.

Key lesson: The next great European destination is probably one you haven't heard of yet.

2025-2026 - Professional Travel Writing

Full-time content creation - The Discovery Siren became my primary focus, with regular travel content, destination partnerships, and a growing community of fellow travelers seeking authentic European experiences.

Key lesson: Turning passion into profession requires maintaining the curiosity that started it all.

Why "The Discovery Siren"?

Travel has always felt like a siren's call to me – that irresistible urge to explore beyond the horizon, to discover what lies around the next corner, to experience something completely new. Like the mythical sirens who called sailors toward adventure, the lure of discovery has shaped my life, leading me from the familiar streets of London to medieval squares in Prague, seaside promenades in Barcelona, and hilltop villages throughout Europe.

My Specialties

European City Breaks: I focus specifically on European destinations because I believe there's something special about being able to have breakfast in London and dinner in Rome, or spending a long weekend immersed in completely different culture and history.

Authentic Experiences: My guides emphasize genuine local culture over tourist attractions. I'd rather point you toward a neighborhood market than a souvenir shop, a family-run restaurant than a chain, a local festival than a staged performance.

Practical Insight: I provide the kind of detailed, practical information that actually helps you navigate a destination confidently – from transportation tips that save time and money to cultural etiquette that opens doors.

Hidden Gems: While I cover major attractions, my passion lies in sharing lesser-known destinations, secret viewpoints, tucked-away cafés, and experiences you won't find in mainstream guidebooks.

Current Projects

I'm currently documenting the renaissance of Eastern European cities, exploring how places like Ljubljana, Cluj-Napoca, and Plovdiv are emerging as cultural powerhouses with incredible food scenes, vibrant arts communities, and fascinating histories that rival their more famous Western counterparts.

I'm also developing a series about sustainable city travel – how to explore European cities responsibly, support local communities, and minimize environmental impact while maximizing cultural immersion.

When I'm Not Traveling

Based in London, I spend my non-traveling time exploring my own city with the same curiosity I bring to foreign destinations. London's incredible diversity means there's always a new neighborhood to discover, a different cuisine to try, or a hidden park to explore. I'm passionate about coffee culture (Vienna ruined me for mediocre coffee), independent bookshops, and finding the perfect spot for people-watching.

I also volunteer with local organizations that help new immigrants navigate London, because I believe the skills that make someone a good traveler – empathy, curiosity, openness to different cultures – are equally important at home.
